Answer engine optimisation (AEO)

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is shaping content so search engines can show it as a direct answer, such as a featured snippet or AI Overview. It's also spelt answer engine optimization, the US form; the work is the same either way.

How does answer engine optimisation work?

Answer engine optimisation works by writing each page and section answer-first: a clear, direct answer to one question at the top, then the detail. FAQ sections are built around the questions customers really ask, facts are sourced so they can be quoted accurately, and structured data such as FAQPage and Organization schema is validated before go-live.

Direct answers show up in featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice answers and Google's AI Overviews.

Why does AEO matter for a small business?

AEO matters for a small business because search engines now show many answers before any links: in snippets, AI Overviews and voice results. A business with clear, quotable answers can be the source those features draw on, even against bigger competitors with more pages. It also makes pages easier for people to read.

What does AEO look like in practice?

This site follows the same rules we use for clients. Every question heading is followed by a 40–60-word answer that makes sense on its own, then the detail, and FAQ sections are written from real buyer questions. In client work, we plan AEO together with SEO and GEO, because they share most of their foundations.
